No, this isn't normaly "world news" but, it's not Celebrity-sluts-thread-news either.

The legend, that woman with THAT voice, has died. Etta James. Can't say I'm sad or, anything but...wow...what a body of work, eh? "At Last " is ofcourse, very famous and you'll hear it at countless weddingparties. But, when those first strings set in and her voice comes through...wow. Now, SHE knew what REAL singing is all about!

"I'd rather go blind" still gets me everytime and `i'm playing it on full blast!

Thank you for the music, Etta; you were spectacular! World news III 2435349535

...and here we are in Heaven..for you are mine...at last!

Cynthia Nixon: I'm gay by choice
Getty Images file

Cynthia Nixon in 2009
By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper
Former "Sex and the City" star Cynthia Nixon is holding firm to her statement that she has chosen to be homosexual, although her comments have sparked controversy in the gay and lesbian community.

"For me, it is a choice," Nixon says in a New York Times Magazine profile. "I understand that for many people it’s not, but for me it’s a choice, and you don’t get to define my gayness for me."

Her statement hasn't gone over well with gay activists. Writing in AMERICAblog Gay, John Aravosis says that Nixon, who had a long relationship with a man that produced two children before coming out as gay in 2004, is actually bisexual. "She needs to learn how to choose her words better, because she just fell into a right-wing trap, willingly," he writes, "When the religious right says it's a choice, they mean you quite literally choose your sexual orientation, you can change it at will, and that's bull."

advertisementHe went on to say, "Every religious right hatemonger is now going to quote this woman every single time they want to deny us our civil rights."

Nixon seemed to anticipate the controversy when she gave her interview to the New York Times, saying then "Why can’t it be a choice? Why is that any less legitimate? It seems we’re just ceding this point to bigots who are demanding it, and I don’t think that they should define the terms of the debate."

Some saw a humorous side. Jack Cullen, who writes for Gay Times, tweeted: "Putting Cynthia Nixon to one side. Let's hear from some famous bisexual men who chose to be straight, starting with EVERYONE IN HOLLYWOOD."

Nixon came out as gay in 2004, and is in a relationship with Christine Marinoni. The two have a son together in addition to Nixon's children from her previous relationship. She is currently starring as a woman undergoing cancer treatement in the Broadway play "Wit." Nixon herself discovered she had an early stage of breast cancer in 2006

If you were bi-sexual, then yeah you could choose to have an either gay or straight relationship but that won't change the fact that you like both sexes. Its in your genes, baby!

I can see how nixons' statement might be more ammo for the conservatives. But, she is her own best judge, i think. i know that my "gayness" expresses itself in a different way; i have always known I'm gay-as a definition of my sexuality. some people have perfectly happy heterosexual relationships and find themselves completely falling in love with a PERSON of the same sex. it sounds odd and I'm not going to pretend to understand Nixon. but, it's her perogative and I'm going to accept that. in the same way that, i expect people to respect MY definition of MY sexuality. i might not get her; but, I respect her for staying true to what she believes to be the case, concerning her sexual relationships.

I think it's a woman-thing. ladies are always more touchy feely with eachother, regardless of their sexuality, couple that with a strong emotional connection and it's a small step from a kiss- to hardcore rug-munching:P

I guess I don't know enough about this to have a real opinion. Any thoughts?

Keystone to be linked to U.S. highway bill: Boehner

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican lawmakers will try to force the Obama administration to approve the Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL pipeline by attaching it to a highway bill that Congress will consider next month, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said on Sunday.

President Barack Obama earlier this month denied TransCanada's application for the oil sands pipeline, citing lack of time to review an alternative route within a 60-day window for action set by Congress.

Republicans have since been looking for a vehicle to resurrect the $7 billion project, and Boehner said that would be a House Republican energy and highway bill.

"If (Keystone) is not enacted before we take up the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act, it will be part of it," Boehner said on ABC's "This Week" news program.

Environmentalists and some Democrats oppose Keystone, citing higher greenhouse gas emissions, while most Republicans say it would create needed jobs.

Republicans in the Senate also plan to introduce a Keystone bill. Some Senate Democrats back the pipeline, but its passage is not guaranteed in the body.

Parts of the House Republican plan, such as opening up the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration, stand little chance of passing the Democratic-controlled U.S. Senate.

Attaching Keystone to a pending deal to extend payroll tax cuts for workers, which has greater bipartisan backing than the highway bills, is another vehicle Republicans are considering.

Sauli Niinisto wins Finnish Presidential Elections

Sauli Niinisto wins Finnish Presidential Elections Helsinki: A former finance minister won Finland’s Presidential Election on Sunday and will become the country’s first conservative head of state in five decades.

Sauli Niinisto took 63 percent of the votes, compared to 37 percent for his rival, Greens candidate Pekka Haavisto, official results showed with 100 percent of ballots counted.

The 63-year-old Niinisto will be the first president from the conservative National Coalition Party since 1956, and the first in 30 years from a party other than the centre-left Social Democrats. He will replace Tarja Halonen, Finland’s only female head of state and one of its most popular leaders, who has served the maximum two six-year terms.

“The president in Finland has to understand that there are many different thoughts and opinions and that they must be taken into account so that he can be the president of the whole nation,” Niinisto said in his victory speech.

Finland’s president has a largely ceremonial role with fewer powers now than in previous decades, and is not directly involved in daily politics. However, the head of state is seen as an important shaper of public opinion, takes the lead on non-EU matters of foreign policy and plays a role as a “brand ambassador” of Finland overseas.

Haavisto said the runoff between two pro-European Union candidates sent a strong signal to the world that the Nordic country wants to participate in a constructive way in helping solve Europe’s financial woes.

“There is no simple solution to the European crisis and the future of Europe ... and certainly Sauli Niinisto’s strengths are in the financial sector,” Haavisto said.

The fact that both candidates in the runoff supported continued membership in the debt-ridden eurozone was also a relief for pro-European forces in Finland, who feared they were losing ground after the euroskeptic True Finns party surged to 20 percent in last year’s Parliamentary Election.

“Finland has returned to a society of common sense, where we fear nothing, but are courageous, internationally minded and tolerant. I’m very pleased about that,” said Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen, also of the National Coalition Party.

Niinisto, who was finance minister when Finland adopted the euro in 2002, beat seven other candidates in the first round two weeks ago but failed to get the majority required to avoid a runoff.

Haavisto, the first openly gay candidate to run for president in Finland, finished second in the first round but trailed Niinisto in polls leading up to the runoff.

Niinisto narrowly lost the previous Presidential Election six years ago to Halonen.

“He’s the best — stable and steady — and will represent Finland in an exemplary manner,” said Matti Oksanen, a retired engineer, before casting his ballot in a snowy suburb of Helsinki where the temperature plummeted to -15 F (-26 C). “We are not ready yet for the more radical candidate.”

Haavisto, a soft-spoken former environment minister, drew his support from a core of young, liberal, urban voters.

“I voted for Haavisto, but it was a difficult choice. The men are very similar, but Haavisto is more open and more forward-looking,” said Vesa Lehtinen, 39, who works for a computer company in Helsinki.

Many of Niinisto’s party colleagues support Finnish membership in NATO, but he said before the vote he would not press that issue. Polls show most Finns are against joining the alliance.

Niinisto is married and has two adult sons from a previous marriage. His first wife died in a car accident. Niinisto and his sons were among the survivors of the 2004 tsunami while vacationing in Thailand.

Both Niinisto and Haavisto entered Parliament in 1987. They come from affluent backgrounds, share a gentlemanly manner and, in true Finnish fashion, were not provoked into confrontation during debates.

Haavisto’s sexual orientation wasn’t a major issue in debates, but analysts said it was an obstacle in the race.

“The older generation simply isn’t ready for it,” said Olavi Borg, a political analyst.

If the president has a more' ceremonial" role. How does that work in your parliament, anne? Do they have a say in lawmaking and stuff or is that a matter for a multi-partied government? Do you have a Prime minister?

Yeah we have a prime minister and he has more power basically. President is more of an discussion opener and has certain specific duties. He does "lead" foreign politics together with the government and is the "high commander" of army forces. But that's basically it.

Fucking Geert Wilders is at it again;

So this is a guy whose party is mainly about hating on muslims. It has to be said; in recent years his party has made great strides in making a meaningful contribution to our government. But when it comes to polarizing the nation, he's still going strong.

First he picks on muslims and how they are a danger to our society, when that doesn't have the desired effect he starts name calling: "head-rag wearers, Islamic Apes(president Erdogan). Then he specifically targets marrocans-not the small minority of teen-hoodlums no; ALL OF THEM...and now it's everybody from Eastern europe. he has set up a watchdog-type of affair, where people can dial a number if they are experiencing problems with Polish people.

Really, that peroxide monkey really doesn't like it when he's finally being taken seriously. as soon as the folds are smoothed out; he ruffles it up and starts creating a devide. As a 2nd generation immigrant I'm starting to feel less than welcome in my own country. I kind of have a middle-eastern look and the way "dutch"people have been looking at me when i walk down the streets is SO unpleasant!Imagine actually being marrocan. And when they hear me speak or catch my name they go: "OMG>! I thought you were a muslim or, something! You're surinamese? oh. we don't have a problem with that"
FUCK OFF! I'M DUTCH! But, if you want to typecast me; FINE . i'll put on a FUCKING turband and start running down the streets shouting Allahu Akbar for your entertainment; there's polarization for ya.

FUCK Geert Wilders and his party of convicted criminals(true fact and all having to do with grieveous bodily harm). He's a cunt with no real solutions. It's just namecalling with him. I can't believe that some people (especially those who DON'T live in the Netherlands) praise this stupid racist.

Fuck China and Russia. The Arab-league is congregating in hopes of getting Assad to stop shooting at people. 500 people are dead since the military started attacking the 3rd largest city in Syria. Kofi Anan is also present at the meeting as a special envoy for the UN. yet; without Russia and China's backing; nothing is gonna happen.
This reminds me of Rwanda. Everyody knew what was going on, the UN was veto-ing left, right and centre and over a million people were killed within days.

A dingo killed my baby! My opinions are too coloured by Meryl Streep's performance. However:

SYDNEY (AP) — A coroner on Friday opened the fourth inquest into the most notorious and bitter legal drama in Australia's history: the 1980 death of a 9-week-old baby whose parents say a dingo took her from a tent in the Australian Outback.
Azaria Chamberlain's mother, Lindy, was convicted and later cleared of murdering her and has always maintained that a wild dog took the baby. She and her ex-husband, Michael Chamberlain, are hoping fresh evidence about dingo attacks on children will convince Northern Territory Coroner Elizabeth Morris and end relentless speculation that has followed them for 32 years.

Anne Lade, a former police officer hired by the court to investigate the case, told a packed courtroom that in the years since Azaria disappeared, there have been numerous dingo attacks on humans, some of them fatal. Rex Wild, a lawyer assisting the coroner, described several of the attacks and said he believed the evidence showed that a dingo could have been responsible for Azaria's death.
"Although it (a dingo killing a child) may have been regarded as unlikely in 1980 ... it shouldn't be by 2011-12," he said. "With the additional evidence in my submission, your honor should accept on the balance of probabilities that the dingo theory is the correct one."

Morris adjourned the hearing without saying when she would release her findings.
Azaria's death certificate still lists the cause of death as "unknown." The Chamberlains say they want to set the record straight on behalf of their daughter.
"It gives me hope this time that Australians will finally be warned and realize that dingoes are a dangerous animal," Lindy said outside the courthouse in the Northern Territory capital, Darwin. "I also hope that this will give a final finding which closes the inquest into my daughter's death, which so far has been standing open and unfinished."
Azaria vanished on Aug. 17, 1980, during a family vacation to Ayers Rock, the giant red monolith now known by its Aboriginal name Uluru. Fellow campers told police they heard a low growl followed by a baby's cry shortly before Lindy — who had been making dinner at a nearby barbecue area — went to check on her daughter.

Lindy said she saw a dingo run from the tent and disappear into the darkness. There were dingo prints outside the tent, and spots of blood on the bedding. Upon seeing Azaria's empty bassinet, Lindy screamed, "The dingo's got my baby!" — a line made famous by the Meryl Streep movie, "A Cry in the Dark," based on the case.
Azaria's body was never found, though her torn and bloodied jumpsuit turned up in the surrounding desert.

Officials, doubtful that a dingo was strong enough to drag away a baby, charged Lindy with murder. Prosecutors said she slit Azaria's throat in the family car — which initial forensic tests said was splashed with baby's blood — and buried her in the desert. Lindy was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

Years later, more sophisticated tests found that the "blood" in the car was a combination of milk and a chemical sprayed during manufacture. Three years into Lindy's prison sentence, a jacket Azaria had been wearing was found by chance near a dingo den. Lindy was released from prison and her conviction was overturned.

Still, three separate coroner's inquests have failed to agree on a cause of death for Azaria. The last inquest, held in 1995, returned an inconclusive finding, with the coroner saying there was not enough evidence to prove a dingo was responsible.
Since then, the Chamberlains have gathered new evidence of around a dozen dingo attacks on children, three of them fatal, said their lawyer, Stuart Tipple. That evidence was presented to Morris, the coroner, for consideration at Friday's inquest.
"When you actually look at what has already been given, and you consider the new evidence, we say you are compelled to make a finding that Azaria was taken by a dingo," Tipple told The Associated Press.

In court, Michael Chamberlain fought back tears as he spoke of the nightmarish aftermath of his daughter's death.
"Since the loss of Azaria I have had an abiding fear and paranoia about safety around dingoes," he said. "They send a shudder up my spine. It is a hell I have to endure."
Australians have followed the case closely since it began, and most have strong opinions. Although public support for Lindy has grown over the years, many still doubt that a dingo could have killed Azaria.

"I think that the people that don't think for themselves aren't ever going to be convinced, and it really doesn't matter what you show them," Tipple told the AP. "I could show them a video of the dingo taking the baby and it wouldn't convince them — because they've made their mind up."
