I had my first voice-coaching last night. I have been speaking from the back of my throat my whole life but am now being taught to speak from the stomach upwards; the result was shocking; my 'real' voice is very deep and needs a lot of work. Apparently I have been stuck in this rut of speaking by the way I am treated by people; by people like Jane!! she wants to keep me pink!!

you should all try it; speak from your stomach, not the back of your throat. Breathe in through your nose, and then speak on the exhale

LOL! that's so cool Nicky.It's so much better for your voice! Back when I used to have a vocal coach, she told me that, I have been speaking from the back of my throat my whole life. It makes the voice pitchy and "thin" which is why, I have such a pink voice. but when I learned how to relax my larynx and sang with "breath-support"(from the stomach on the exhale)it added a lot of resonance and there is less strain on the chords.

Due to incorrect use of my chords, i've developed nodules and now, I have a "break" through my entire mid-register.I can't sing with it and I sound hoarse when I speak My lower,upper and whistle register are still intact. So I can still do "funny-voices"

why did you have a vocal coach, Rodney? were you seeking to escape the pink label that people paint you with, like me?

My 'new' voice definitely needs some work, though. It's rather too deep and also because I'm not used to speaking like it, the voice has no character - I sound like a robot, also because I feel I don't have the confidence to inject much feeling into it

I don't mind my voice! I used to sing. That's why i had one :P. You should "speak the way you speak" when using breath support. Don't "make" your voice sound lower. If you have a high-speaking voice then so be it. Speak with resonance and confidence.

no, as it turns out, when I speak on the 'exhale' from my stomach I actually have a rather deep voice, deeper than I'd like actually - I have seem to have gone from one extreme to the other; I guess in upcoming sessions she'll teach me to find more of a balance

Nicky I find it very sad that you think you need to change yourself. Who made you feel this way.

I also am a bit uncomfortable with this. Your voice is so much.. who you are. I understand doing this if you have actual problems with your voice, you are singer/actor or if you have for some reason lost your voice or have learned to use it wrong. Is the latter it Nicky? That you feel you have at some point "pink'ified' your voice?

I want to change it because people are always judging me on my voice and I've often been teased for it. As a result I also speak so quietly I frequently find I have to repeat myself

I'm with Anne on this, Nicky.
I did the vocal training because of singing and acting; not to change my voice. My voice is my own and yes- it's pink. And people do pass judgment. But they also pass judgment because of my height, skin-colour-job,house,personality,family, etc, etc....
This vocal-training should have the aim to speak with more confidence, a clearer sound and healthy use of your chords. Trying to sound more "masculine" is rediculous(unless you've just landed a part in a new Stallone-movie):you have your "own" masculinity. don't allow detractors and society to tell you otherwise. Like I said: Speak with resonance and confidence. After all; it's about what you say. Not how you say it. But when you do say something; make sure you speak with conviction. Pink voice or not!

Jane-when done properly, using breath support increases the "stamina" of your voice. You're making less use of your larynx. That's why it can sound a bit "disconnected" in the beginning. But once you "ease" into it and it becomes second nature, you'll notice how your speaking-voice stays the same. Only richer and clearer. People who have been speaking/singing from the back of the throat, often find themselves dropping an octave or, two.

I've never heard your voice, Nicky but I know I would like it because I like you. Look at Truman Capote. He OWNED that voice of his and was all the more interesting and unique for having it! It was indeed part of who he was.
That said, if you really feel like vocal training would help your confidence, well then go for it. But anyone worth giving a shit about loves you just the way you are.

my voice tells people I am gay instantly, and not so much that but a certain sort of gay, which I don't like. And like I said, because I'm not confident I speak quietly

I thought what prompted this was looking to the future and job opportunities where you may be speaking in public.
